• Educational Scholarship Grant 

    Description: The AAP Educational Scholarship Grant was created in 2024 to support the academic career development of junior faculty education scholars. The goal of this seed grant is to: 
    Stimulate and encourage innovative education scholarship in health professions education (HPE) 
    Provide a mechanism for junior faculty to build their scholarly development and in turn academic career development 
    Promote mentorship and scholarly collaborations within the AAP community

  • Eligibility:

    • AAP members are encouraged to apply for this educational scholarship grant to conduct education scholarship in HPE. AAP members can collaborate with non-AAP members, but the principal investigator of the educational project submission must be an AAP member.
    • Proposals should be submitted for no more than US$6,000. Proposals for smaller amounts are encouraged.
    • Proposals for consideration include:
      • Projects that will benefit psychiatrists, psychiatry trainees, and other health professionals.
      • Projects that advance the field of education across the learner continuum (i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate/graduate medical education, faculty development, and continuing professional development).
  • The reviewers reserve the opportunity to request further information about proposed purchases or uses of specific technology. Indirect costs are not covered, and funds cannot be used for travel and lodging to the AAP meeting. Submit only one project per application.

     

    Project Proposal FAQs:

    What types of education scholarship are eligible?
    No specific form of education scholarship is excluded but the Principal Investigator must be a member of AAP. The proposal, if granted the award, must be approved or deemed exempt by the relevant institution IRBs. This step is not required for literature reviews.

    What is the length of the grant?
    Grants will generally be given for up to three years. Exceptions will need special justification.

    Where will the research be disseminated/published?
    The annual AAP meeting as a poster or WIPs presentation will be required. Recipients are strongly encouraged to publish their work, if appropriate and within scope, in the Academic Psychiatry Journal.

    What are the criteria for funding?

    • Relevance to education in at least one of the following areas
      • undergraduate medical education
      • postgraduate/graduate medical education
      • faculty development
      • continuing professional development
    • Likelihood of achievement of goal
    • Value of contribution to the field (scientific merit)
    • Originality and creativity
    • Availability of other funding sources or matching funds
    • Potential for presentation of results
    • Potential for resulting in more extended program of scholarship and extended funding
    • Potential for collaborations with other AAP members
    • Potential for academic career development of other AAP member(s) (faculty and trainees).


Budget Guidelines

Awards can be used for the following:

  • production of materials
  • data analysis and collection
  • costs associated with dissemination (i.e.. poster layout and printing costs)
  • costs to run interviews/focus groups
  • costs for research assistant, transcription, summarizing of data and assistance with presentation and manuscript development, incentives (i.e. gift cards, honorariums, etc.)
  • costs for simulation, illustrations, learning portals/websites, IT/e-learning related projects (i.e. technological consultation, needs assessment, content writing, evaluation, graphic design,)
  • costs for technology needed for the project
