Welcome to The Little America Hotel!
Would you believe that the comfort and richness of The Little America Hotel had its humble beginnings in 1934 as a truck stop in Wyoming? It was a twelve-room motel with two gas pumps and a small cafe. The Little America Hotel founder, S.M. Covey, was a young sheepherder in 1890 and caught in a terrible blizzard in a remote area of Wyoming. He vowed to one day build a refuge for others in that same remote Wyoming location. The name "Little America" was inspired by Admiral Richard E. Byrd's basecamp in Antarctica (of the same name). The Little America mascot, a penguin, pays tribute to the Antartica roots and continues to be part of The Little America Hotel logo today.
Little America expanded to Salt Lake City in 1955 as a little roadside motel and it became a downtown staple. It was managed and eventually purchased by Robert and Carol Holding and has expanded into a 10 acre, 700 room, 25,000 square foot premier luxury event space! In 2002, its more opulent sister property, The Grand America, opened across the street, just in time to accommodate the visitors for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games.
At The Little America, enjoy several cozy fireplaces, lounge bar, The Lucky H Bar, The Lucky H Buffet, The Coffee Shop (don't miss the fluffy, airy, melt-in-your-mouth, made-from-scratch dinner rolls), boutique shops, indoor/outdoor pool, fitness center and spacious, well-appointed guest rooms. The thoughtful, longtime staff at The Little America will make you feel right at home. Across the street at The Grand America you can enjoy additional restaurants (including regular Sunday Brunch and daily tea time), The Grand Spa, additional curated boutiques, and a beautiful courtyard/garden.
Did we mention the views? Whether you are up high or down low, you will definitely be enjoying the views of Salt Lake City and the surrounding mountains of Utah. If you choose to stay in the city, we hope you will enjoy the views of the buildings in Temple Square including the intricate architecture of the Mormon Temple contrasted with the "turtle dome" of the Mormon Tabernacle. A wonderful restaurant in Temple Square to visit called The Roof offers some spectacular views of Salt Lake City along with some outstanding local cuisine (think upscale renditions of funeral potatoes and dirty sodas).
The Little America is located about a block from the UTA Trax light rail system. A daily pass is only $5 and can easily transport you around town, to/from the airport and the University of Utah Medical Center campus. The Salt Lake City International Airport is approximately 10 minutes away (20-30 via Trax, depending on the time of day). Speaking of public transportation, Salt Lake City is also a very green city and embraces bike and scooter travel as well. And if you are a hiker, great trails ahead! Visit Salt Lake has created a special site just for our meeting. Take a moment to check it out.
